  • Drew Faust was born with the full name of Catharine Drew Gilpin on September 18, 1947 in New York City and raised in Clarke County, Virginia, in Shenandoah Valley. She is the daughter of Catharine Ginna and McGhee Tyson Gilpin, a graduate of Princeton University and racing horse breeder. His great-grandfather Lawrence Tyson was a US Senator from Tennessee in 1920.

    Drew Faust graduated from the Concord Academy in Concord Massachusetts in 1964. Many of his male relatives, including his father and two brothers who attended Princeton University. Unfortunately, Princeton University did not accept female students in 1960, so Faust then went to Bryn Mawr College. He earned a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1968. He then graduated "magna cum laude" with honors in history.

    He received his MA in 1971 and then a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 with his dissertation entitled A Sacred Circle: The Social Role of the Intellectual in the Old South 1840-1860. That same year, he joined Penn's faculty as an assistant professor in American civilization courses. Afterwards he was appointed Professor of History where he was a specialist in pre-war history and Civil War, Drew Faust developed a new perspective in intellectual history before the Southern war and in the role of women's change during the Civil War.
